Forget your diet when eating food at the fair

Part of the fun of the Porter County Fair, like that of any decent fair, is the ability to eat food that normally you couldn't, wouldn't or shouldn't.

In the excesses of glaring lights, music and wild rides, the smell and taste of the food still stands out.

It used to be a way for farmers to try things like tacos that were new to their area, while the kids ate sweet treats.

Now things like Oreos and macaroni and cheese are deep-fried, along with elephant ears and funnel cakes, and the fair provides an excuse to go off the diet in a large way.

It seems each year another food is put on a stick to make it easier to eat and walk.

From a long tradition, food on a stick this year includes cotton candy, ice cream bars, candy apples, taffy apples, frozen bananas, lines of chocolate-covered strawberries, pizza and chocolate-covered, marshmallow-and-rice-cereal decorated with frosting designs.

Chicken-on-a-stick is related to shish-ka-bobs, both available, also.

The corn dog, one of the original fair foods (along with popcorn, soda and cotton candy), is the epitome of fair food.

It's fried; it's on a stick; it's got sugar in the batter.

And it's in no way healthy eating -- it just tastes good, especially with mustard.
