A sweet-and-salty mix of flavor enhancers sprinkled on food is a new weight-loss method some say is helping them cut portions and drop pounds.

The sprinkles, called Sensa, were developed by Dr. Alan Hirsch of the Smell and Taste Treatment Center.

"What the sprinkles are is this unique blend of different sweet flavors and salty flavors -- things like cheddar cheese, mocha, horse radish," Hirsch said.

Dolly Kiosea said he has lost 28 pounds using the sprinkles.

The product is used on foods that include yogurt, cereal with milk and desserts.

"What we are doing is intensifying the smell and taste of the food," Hirsch said.

Hirsch said he completed a clinical study of nearly 1,500 people who used the sprinkles on everything they ate without changing their diet or exercise routines.

"We found an average weight loss over six months of 30.5 pounds," Hirsch said.
