GREEN BAY (WFRV) - There's a high demand for the first over the counter diet pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But it's not a miracle pill. You still have to do the work to lose weight.
Alli is a low dose version of the prescription drug Xenical. It hit the store shelves in the United States five days ago.
It's makers say the pill blocks about 25% of the fat you eat so your body doesn't absorb it. But it's not as easy as just taking a pill. You need to follow a reduced calorie low fat diet. And if you ear more than 15 grams of fat per meal, there could be side effects.
Debbie Guenterberg from St. Mary's Hospital Clinic says, "Some of the side effects are going to be more frequent bowel movements, more liquidy, more greasy things like that very uncomfortable.
Despite the side effects, a Walgreens spokesperson says Alli is already selling out in a number of stores.
Alli costs about $50.00 for a month's supply and is only recommended for people who are a certain percentage over their ideal weight.
