French fries, burgers, greasy potato chips: They are all big-time diet busters, but some Ohio scientists claim these fatty favorites may have finally met their match.

Jason Farlam has lost 47 pounds and counting.

Two researchers at Wayne State University developed a diet pill called Alpha-Fibe FBCx, and they say it allows people to eat a normal diet and lose weight without exercise.

The pill is made from a natural, corn-based fiber.

"Unlike any other fiber that I'm aware of, it can bind nine times its own weight in dietary fat. So by taking as directed, the six tablets per day with your fat containing meals, it will remove about 25 to 30 percent of the calories and 50 to 60 percent of the fat from a typical North American diet," said Dr. Joseph Artiss.

Farlam has been taking Alpha-Fibe FBCx for several months.

"I can eat all the meat that I want. I can eat beef stew, cake, roast, prime ribs are my favorite food. I continue to eat that way," he said.

So far, only one diet pill is FDA approved, Alli, which blocks the digestion of fat like Alpha-Fibe does.

Both Alli and Alpha-Fibe list side effects like gas, and nutritionists warn against anyone relying on any pill alone to achieve a healthy weight.

"We don't want people to use this as a magic bullet or as a license to overeat," said Alpha-Fibe developer Dr. Catherine Jen.

Marybeth Kavanagh, a registered dietician at Case, said to keep in mind that whatever fat isn't absorbed has to go somewhere - so if you overdo it, you'll need a bathroom nearby.
