A diet pill banned in America was yesterday approved by watchdogs for use in the NHS.
Acomplia will be offered to obese people who have failed to lose weigh on two other NHS drugs.
The drug is not available in the US after studies raised fears that it can induce suicidal thoughts in people suffering depression.
However, the one-a-day pill - which is also known as rimonabant - ia available in France and Germany and has been on sale in the UK since 2006.
Dr David Haslam, of the national Obesity Forum, said: "The new guidance is of real benefit to doctors trying to manage this growing group of patients."
