In tonight's health alert, it may sound like extreme dieting, but some experts are suggesting you get your blood tested to find out which foods are right for you. Roughly, 1 in 3 Americans is now obese, but diets can be frustrating when they don't work. But new research finds a blood test may help determine the best diet for people with high insulin levels.

Those who produce a lot of insulin after eating may do better on a low glycemic diet, which is specifically designed to improve blood sugar. In the new study, people with high insulin levels lost an average of 13 pounds on the low-glycemic diet, compared to less than 3 pounds for those on a low fat diet.

Rather than have dieters count calories, the low-glycemic diet encourages fruits & vegetables, nuts, whole grains and even full fat dairy products. Early results look promising, but this was a very small study, only 73 people. So, of course, more research is needed.
