From four pallets of onions and potatoes in a small stand at City Market to 4.5 million cases of produce at a 126,000-square-foot facility, Liberty Fruit Co. Inc. has tended its growth like a garden.
Founded in 1965 by Issie Caviar, Liberty Fruit has overcome the obstacles of generational and economic change, recording $76.1 million in revenue for fiscal year 2008.
Now in a transition from second generation to third, the company has found a way to keep the business in the family, with a little outside help.
With more than 1,600 clients in five states, Arnold Caviar, the founder's son, has carried the business from the start. As a semi-retired business owner, Caviar knows he will never fully leave.
