Diet Coke blasts off

Capital EX crowds are being entertained this week with "pyrotechnics" that use little more than Diet Coke and Mentos mints.
Until Saturday, the internationally renowned EepyBird crew will drop mints into soda pop bottles nightly, providing fairgoers with a fizzy fireworks display that has already been witnessed by about 40 million people around the globe.
For those who haven't seen a YouTube video on the subject, dropping Mentos into diet Coke bottles causes the pop to explode into the air.
While the New York Times reviewed a performance as "hilarious", Rolling Stone magazine billed the performers as "wizards."
Yet, despite displaying their tricks throughout the world, the team has never performed in Canada - until now.
"We've been to Turkey, Holland, Belgium, London, Paris, Madrid ..." said Fritz Grobe, who calls Buckfield, Maine, home. "And all over the U.S., including Las Vegas. It's taken over our lives."

Grobe performs with Stephen Voltz, a lawyer, juggler and comedian who grew up in San Francisco. Grobe, meanwhile, is a writer and professional circus performer.
Together, the men strive to create simplistic performances that leave audiences in awe, Grobe said.
"We're always looking for ways everyday objects can do extraordinary things," Grobe told Sun Media. "We're trying to find these beautiful images that would surprise people, using things you can get at the corner store.
"Whether you're seven or 77, you can enjoy it and have a great time."
The group's new Canadian fans have certainly been receptive, he said.
"It's been fantastic," Grobe said. "We're having so much fun. Everywhere we go, people hoot and holler and smile.
"We've had a great time here in Canada."
The show begins at the EX at 7:45 p.m.
