The Medical Society of the State of New York advises patients that the days of people eating pasta for the purpose of losing weight may be over for good.

The New England Journal of Medicine released a report July 17 that compared three types of diets, and, supporting earlier but shorter studies, low-carbohydrate diets (popularized by Atkins) won again. Along with Mediterranean diets, which also did well, the low-carbohydrate diets produced greater weight loss and more favorable metabolic events than low-fat diets.

The recent study involved 322 adults in Israel, primarily men (86 percent), between the ages of 40 and 65 who were moderately obese or had diabetes or heart disease.

The three groups were randomly selected to follow one of three diets for two years: low-fat, calorie-restricted (often high pasta) or Mediterranean, calorie-restricted (usually high vegetable, low red meat, moderate fat) or low-carbohydrate, non-calorie-restricted (often high protein).
